Excerpt from The Liver Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse by Andreas Moritz (expert on the subject)
"Every house and appliance requires some form of maintenance or repair work from time to time; otherwise, it will lose its ability to carry out the true purpose for which it was designed. The same principle applies to the liver. No other organ besides the brain is as complex and has as many vital functions as the liver. We clean our teeth and wash our skin every day because we know that exposure to food, air chemicals, and normal metabolic processes tends to leave residues that can make us feel unclean and uncomfortable. Not many people, however, think that the same principle of cleaning also applies to the inner parts of the body. The lungs, and skin, intestines, kidneys, and liver deal with a tremendous amount of internally produced waste, which is necessary by-product of breathing, digestion, and metabolism.
Under normal circumstances, the body can properly deal with the metabolic waste products that accumulate daily by eliminating them safely from the system. The normal circumstances include eating nutritious and organic foods, living in a pollution-free environment, having plenty of physical movement and exercise, and living a balanced, joyful lifestyle. Yet how many of us can claim to live such fulfilling lives? What happens when our diet, lifestyle, and environment are no longer balanced enough to suit the body's requirements of energy, nourishment, and flawless circulation? One of the organs that suffer the most from an overload of toxic chemicals, poor quality of food, and lack of exercise is the liver. Hence, it is of utmost importance for everyone who is concerned about their health to ensure that their liver is cleansed and remains free of any obstructions.
Cleansing the liver is not something someone else can do for you. Rather, it is a self-help method that requires a profound sense of self-responsibility and trust in the natural, innate wisdom of the body. You will only feel drawn toward the liver cleansing when you know deep within yourself that this is something you absolutely have to do. If you do not feel this way, it may be best for you to set it aside and wait for the time being. When the time is right, you will feel the definite impulse or desire to improve your liver's functioning.
"Although the liver cleanse is not a cure for disease, it sets the precondition for the body to heal itself. In fact, it is rare for an ailment not to improve by increasing liver performance. To understand the great significance of the liver cleanse, one needs to personally experience how it feels to have a liver that has been relieved of two handfuls of gallstones. For many people, the liver cleanse has been an "amazing" experience--reason enough for me to share it with those willing to help themselves."
The liver is used in over 500 different functions in the body.
Just a few key functions of the liver include:
Bile production Fat metabolization Protein breakdown
Filters chemicals Immunological function Hormone breakdown
Breakdown of bilirubin and the list goes on and on.
On an energetic level, the liver is crucial to metabolizing emotions. Our emotions have a chemical composition just like a hormone or toxin. When we release trapped emotions, those emotions have to be physically metabolized and excreted out through the body’s normal metabolism pathways.
Also, the liver is the physical organ that moderates how quickly our bodies can handle energetic shifts. When we do an energy session the health of the liver is what determines how quickly and how safely the work will process.
The liver is the body’s primary detoxification organ. When it is functioning properly, we easily detox everything in our lives, including physical, emotional, and energetic toxicity.
When the liver is sluggish and congested we can experience a myriad of symptoms such as:
A "bilious" or angry personality
Headaches or migraines
Backed up lymphatic system
Joint, or bone issues
Difficulty sleeping or nightmares
Our liver can become congested from all kinds of things:
Artificial food coloring and flavors
High fructose corn syrup
Heavy metals from many different sources like antiperspirants and vaccines, and mercury amalgam fillings
Preservatives and plastics in our foods
In our lives, we experience the most radiant health when our livers are in prime condition.
Of course, living in the modern world, all of our livers are compromised. We all deal to some extent with sluggish livers. So what do we do? How can we help our livers heal so we can experience great health and vitality?
I follow and recommend the Andreas Moritz protocol.
He recommends that you do liver cleanses every 3-4 weeks until you have passed somewhere around 2,000 stones.
- Six- 32 oz of pure apple juice(I prefer fresh juiced or organic from the health food store) or Malic acid capsules or apple cider vinegar (with the mother).
- 4 tablespoons of Laxative Epsom Salts dissolved into 24 oz of filtered water in a large glass jar. This makes four-6 oz servings.
- 1/2 cup (4 oz) of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil (I prefer light colored the taste is easier to get down)
- 2/3 glass of fresh grapefuit juice (pink is best), or fresh lemon or orange combined.
- 1-pint jar
To soften the stones and make their passage through the bile ducts easier preparation is needed. This can be done a few different ways.
The protocol of Andreas Moritz calls for 32 oz of fresh or not from concentrate organic apple juice a day. The malic acid in the apple juice softens the stones. The apple juice can have a strong cleansing effect and some sensitive people may experience bloating and occasionally diarrhea during the first few days. If drinking the apple juice becomes uncomfortable you can dilute it with any amount of water. Drink the apple juice slowly throughout the day, between meals (avoid drinking the juice during, just before and in the first two hours after meals, and in the evening).
If you are intolerant to apple juice you can do one of the following things in order to replace it.
Some people may have difficulty drinking apple juice in large quantities required for the liver cleanse. These include those who suffer from diabetes, hypoglycemia, and yeast infection(candida), cancer, and stomach ulcers.
- In any cases of this kind, you may replace apple juice with malic acid in powdered form. Try to avoid malic acid capsules, especially if they contain other ingredients. It is best if the malic acid is properly dissolved before ingesting it. The preparation period is the same as for the apple juice regimen, except that you should substitute 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of malic acid, taken with four to six 8-ounce glasses of room-temperature water for the 32 ounces of apple juice per day. Drink the solution in small amounts throughout the day. Food grade malic acid powder is pretty easy to find at many health food stores or online.
- Another alternative is cranberry juice. Cranberry juice also contains malic acid and can be used for the preparation period. Four ounces of juice mixed with four ounces of water, 4 times per day for 6 days before doing cleanse. It can be combined with apple juice as well.
- Another alternative is gold coin grass tincture(combo of gold coin grass and bupleurum herbs). These herbs are effective in softening gallstones. The proper dosage for the tincture is 1 tablespoonful once daily on an empty stomach, about 30 minutes before breakfast. Do this for 8-9 days before the day of the liver cleanse.
- The fourth and last alternative is apple cider vinegar: mix 1 to 2 tablespoons in a glass of water and drink 4 servings per day, for 6 days up to the day of cleanse.
During the entire week fo preparation and cleansing, avoid foods or beverages that are cold or chilled; they chill the liver and, thereby, reduce the effectiveness of the cleanse. All foods or beverages should be warm or at least room temperature. To help the liver prepare for the main part of the cleanse try to avoid foods from animal sources, dairy products, and fried food items. Otherwise, eat normal meals, but avoid overeating.
Best times for cleansing:
The main and final part of the liver cleanse is best done over a weekend when you are not under any pressure and have enough time to rest. Although the liver cleanse is effective at any time of the month, it should preferably coincide with a day between the full moon and new moon, and away from the menstrual cycle is you are female. Try to avoid doing the actual cleanse on full moon days the body tends to hold more fluids in the brain and tissues on this day than on others. The day of the new moon is the most conducive for cleansing and healing.
If you take any medication or supplements:
While on the liver cleanse regimen, avoid taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements that are not absolutely necessary. It is important not to give the liver any extra work that could interfere with its cleansing efforts. (Please consult with your doctor about making any changes to medication protocols).
Cleansing the colon:
Andreas Mortiz recommends that you make sure your colon and moving properly in order to avoid discomfort or nausea that may arise during the actual liver cleanse. This will assist the body in swiftly eliminating the gallstones. There are a few ways to do this.
Colonic irrigation(colon hydrotherapy) is the fastest and easiest method to prepare for the cleanse, ideally the day of or a few days before the actual cleanse. Colema-board irrigation is the second most preferable method. These options may not be readily available so what I do is take two capsules of Dr. Christophers Lower Bowel formula a day for a few weeks leading up to prep week. This ensures the bowel is clean and moving properly.
The Actual Cleanse
What you need to do on the sixth day of drinking apple juice:
Drink 32 oz of apple juice in the morning. You may start drinking the juice soon after awakening. If you feel hungry in the morning, eat a light breakfast, such as hot cereal; oatmeal would be an ideal choice. Avoid sugar or other sweeteners, spices, milk, butter oils, yogurt, cheese, ham, eggs, nuts, pastries, cold cereals, and the like. Fruit or fruit juices are fine. For lunch eat plain cooked or steamed vegetables with white rice (preferably basmati rice) and flavor with unrefined sea salt. Do Not eat any protein foods, butter, or oil or you might feel ill during the cleanse. We do this because we want a backup of bile for an ultimate successful liver flush.
2 pm on
Stop all eating and drinking of everything except water in small amounts. You do not eat or drink because you are letting bile accumulate, and because in the night you’re going to want to lie flat or on your right side without interruption for 8 consecutive hours–you don’t want to have to get up for a potty break! If you eat you may have difficulties passing stones as well.
Add 4 tablespoons of Epsom salt to 24 oz of water in a glass jar with lid, shake till Epsom salt is dissolved. This makes four-6 oz servings. Drink your first portion (6 oz). This doesn't exactly taste the best so you can add a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice or fresh grapefruit juice to make it a little easier to get down. You may take a few sips of water afterward to neutralize the bitter taste in your mouth. Do not drink large amounts of water.
Drink your second serving of Epsom salt mixture
If you have not had a bowel movement until now and have not done a colon cleanse within the past 24 hours take a water enema, this will trigger a series of bowel movements.
Thoroughly wash your grapefruits (or lemons and oranges). Squeeze them by hand and remove the pulp. Fill pint jar 2/3 full of grapefruit juice and then add a 1/2 a cup of olive oil. Close jar tightly and shake hard about 20 times or until solution looks watery. Ideally, you should drink this mixture at 10:00 pm, but if you feel you still need to visit the bathroom a few times more you may delay this step 10 minutes or so.
Stant next to your bed (do not sit down) and dring the grapefruit concoction, if possible, without interruption. ( I usually have to drink it in 1/3's and shake in between.) This is pretty easy to get down and for the most part, has a pleasant taste. Drinking it while keeping the nostrils closed can help if you are having a hard time getting it down. If necessary use a little raw honey between sips to help go down smoothly. Most though don't have any issue drinking it, I never have. Try to drink it quickly and don't take more than 5 minutes.
Lie down immediately!
This is essential for helping to release the gallstones! Turn off the lights and lie flat on your back with one or two pillows propping your head up. Your head should be higher than your abdomen. If this is uncomfortable and you are a side sleeper like me, you may lie on your right side with your knees pulled up toward your head.
Lie perfectly still for at least 20 minutes and try not to speak. Put your attention on your liver, some people find it beneficial to put a castor oil pack over the liver area.
I like to visualize my liver and the bile ducts opening wide and seeing the stones passing through easily and gently. I also imagine my angels assisting with this process so all goes smoothly and works for my greatest benefit.
You may feel the stones traveling along the bile ducts like marbles. There won't be any spasms or pain because the magnesium in the Epsom salts keeps the bile duct valves wide open and relaxed, and the bile that is excreted along with the stones keeps the ducts well lubricated. (I usually have no issues feeling comfortable and can fall asleep and stay asleep just as I would in a normal night).
Try to sleep for 8 hrs if possible.
If at any time during the night you feel the urge to have a bowel movement, do so. Check if there are already small gallstones(pea green or tan-colored ones) floating in the toilet. You may feel nauseated during the night and/or in the early morning hours. This is mostly due to a strong, sudden outpouring of gallstones and toxins from the liver and gallbladder, pushing the oil mixture back into the stomach. Nausea will pass as the morning progresses.
The next morning.
Upon awakening, but not before 6:00 am drink your third 6 oz of Epsom salts water (if you feel very thirsty, drink a glass of warm water before taking the salts). Rest, read or meditate. If you are sleepy, you may go back to bed, although it is best if the body stays in an upright position. Most people feel fine and prefer to do some light exercise such as yoga.
8 -8:30 am
Drink your fourth and final glass of 6 oz of Epsom salts water.
10 to 10:30 am
You may drink freshly pressed fruit juice at this time. One-half hour later, you may eat one or two pieces of fresh fruit.
11:00 am on
You may eat regular, (light food suggested) avoid processed sugars and greasy food.
By late afternoon or evening, you should feel back to normal and feel the first signs of improvement within the 2-3 days following the cleanse. Remember to eat light meals for a few days afterward, your liver and gallbladder have undergone "surgery," albeit without the harmful side effects or the expense.
Note: Drink water whenever you are thirsty, except right after drinking the Epsom salts and for the first two hours after drinking the oil mixture.
The results you can expect
During the morning and sometimes into the afternoon hours of the cleanse, you will have a number of watery bowel movements. These initially consist of gallstones mixed with food residue, and then just stones mixed with water. Most of the stones are pea green and float in the toilet because they contain bile compounds. The stones will be different shades of green and maybe bright-colored and shiny like gemstones. Only bile from the liver can cause this green color. Stones can come in many sizes, colors and shapes from light colored to stones to dark which are older stones. they can be half pea size up to 1 inch in diameter. Some of the larger tan-colored or white stones may sink to the bottom, these are calcified stones, they contain heavier toxic substances.
You may also find a layer of white or tan-colored chaff, or foam floating in the toilet. The foam consists of millions of white, sharp-edged cholesterol crystals, which can easily rupture small bile ducts. These are equally important to release.
How often can I do a liver cleanse?
It is suggested that you wait at least 3-4 weeks between cleanses to allow the liver time to recuperate. The three-week break between cleanses may include the six-day preparation for the next week liver cleanse.
How many cleanses should I do to get my liver healthy?
To permanently cure health issues related to the liver, and to prevent diseases from arising, you need to remove all the stones. This may require at least 8-12 cleanses. The important thing to remember is that once you have started cleansing the liver, you should keep cleansing it until no more stones come out during two consecutive cleanses. Leaving the liver half clean for a long period of time( three or more months) may cause greater discomfort than not cleansing it at all.
How will I feel after the cleanse?
The liver, as a whole, will begin to function more efficiently soon after the first cleanse, and you may notice sudden improvements, sometimes within several hours. Pains will lessen, energy will increase, and clarity of mind will improve considerably.
However, within a few days, stones from the rear of the liver will have traveled forward toward the two main bile ducts in the liver, which may cause some or all of the previous symptoms
It may feel as if your recovery is short-lived, yet all of this merely indicates that some stones were left behind, and are ready to be removed on the next round.
Caution: Never cleanse when you are suffering an acute illness, even if its just a simple cold. If you suffer from chronic illness, however, cleansing your liver may be the best thing you can do for yourself.
Also, people whose colon is severely congested, or who have a history of constipation, should consider doing at least 2-3 colon cleanses before their first liver cleanse.
I strongly recommend reading The liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse book by Andreas Moritz if you are going to do liver cleanses. There is invaluable information in the book that will help you to be successful in cleansing.
